Moving house interstate with a shipping container

FlowState Logistics moves shipping containers for people moving house: we move the container; you, or your removalist, pack it. Use your own container or hire one from us, pack it in your own time, and we take it to the new address, across town or interstate.

How it works

  1. The container arrives. If you are hiring, we deliver an empty container to your home. If you own one, tell us where it is.
  2. You pack it in your own time.
  3. We move it to the new address. Interstate moves, and longer runs up the Queensland coast, usually go by rail with a truck at each end.
  4. You unpack, and if the container is hired we collect it when you are done.

What size do you need?

A 20ft holds roughly a one to three bedroom home. Larger homes go in a 40ft or a second container. Our 20ft and 40ft containers drawn to scale show what fits.

A packed home usually sits in the 5 to 10 tonne band for a 20ft, which travels on a tilt tray. Heavier 20ft containers and 40ft moves are done by side loader.

Your own container, or one of ours

Your own: if it is going by rail it needs a current CSC plate, which we check from a quick photo. If there is no plate or it has expired, it needs a survey to get one, which is an extra cost, and we can organise it. More on transporting your own shipping container.

Hired from us: hire runs for a minimum of one month, then month to month, from depots in the mainland capital cities and many regional centres. In remote areas with no depot nearby, we offer a container to buy and keep instead. One way interstate hire is always priced by hand, so tell us both addresses and we will quote the container and the move together. More on shipping container hire.

Packing

We move the container. You, or your removalist, pack and unpack it. Pack it tight and secure the contents so nothing shifts on the way. For rail, lock the doors with a rated padlock or a seal before the container is collected.

What can go in it

Household goods travel like any other cargo and are covered by our goods in transit insurance. If jewellery, artwork, electronics, a vehicle, machinery or anything else valuable is going in, tell us first so we can check the cover for it. A vehicle or machinery in the container means the job is priced by hand. Dangerous goods must be declared when you enquire and need separate approval.

Where the container sits

A tilt tray needs firm, level ground, clear overhead and a straight run of about 15 to 20 metres. If either address is tight, send us a photo and we will check it with the operator before we book. If the container will sit on the street or the verge, check with your council first.

Timing

Tell us your date, or even a rough timeframe. Timing is estimated in your quote. Rail operators and carriers do not guarantee arrival times, so we tell you what to expect for your lane and keep you posted. If there will be a gap between leaving one home and getting into the next, tell us when you enquire, because storage at a rail terminal is charged by the day.

What it costs

The calculator prices the move on the spot between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, and to many regional centres on the rail network. Other regional and remote moves are priced by hand within one business day. If you are hiring, the hire, the empty delivery and the collection are added in your written quote.

What is included

Your move, door to door

Tell us both addresses and the size. Your price or a hand quote comes back within one business day, one point of contact start to finish.
